Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the deterioration of the household economy due to COVID-19 on adolescents¡¯ suicidal ideation.
Methods: Using data from the 16th Adolescent Health Behavior Survey (KYRBS), 2020, this cross-sectional study included 54,948 adolescents. We evaluated the deterioration of household economic conditions and suicidal thoughts due to COVID-19 through subjective, non-face-to-face online interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression.
Results: The overall prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the study population was 10.9%. People whose household economy deteriorated due to COVID-19 had more suicidal thoughts than those whose economy did not deteriorate. Worse (aOR=1.548, 95% CI=1.437?1.667, very worse (aOR=2.489, 95% CI=2.242?2.763) based on no economic deterioration.
Conclusions: Rather than relying on self-reports of suicidal ideation due to COVID-19, objective measurement and research is needed on this subject.
